Hello everyone! I have a quick question about doxycycline. My dog, Max, has been prescribed 100 mg of doxycycline twice daily for an infection. Can anyone share their experience with this dosage? It seems quite high.

Hi DogLover78! I'm a vet assistant and can help you out here. The dosage of doxycycline for dogs is typically based on the dog's weight, and it ranges from 5 to 10 mg per kilogram of body weight every 12 hours. So if Max weighs around 20 kg (44 lbs), a 100 mg dose twice daily would be appropriate.

Thank you, VetAssistant! That makes sense. Max does weigh about that much. Should I worry if he misses a dose occasionally?

If it happens once or twice, don't panic. However, consistency is key with antibiotics to ensure the infection clears up completely and doesn't develop resistance. If you do miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember, but if it's close to the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue on schedule.

I had my dog on doxycycline for a respiratory infection. It worked wonders! Just make sure Max drinks plenty of water to avoid any potential upset stomach or esophageal irritation from the medication.

Thanks, HappyHound! I'll keep an eye on his water intake. Any tips for getting him to take the pill?

DogLover78, you can try hiding it in a small piece of wet food or use a pill pocket treat. Make sure Max swallows the whole pill and drinks water afterward to prevent irritation.

I found that mixing doxycycline with some canned dog food works well too! Just make sure it doesn't sit out for too long if you're not using it immediately, as the medication can degrade.

Great advice, thank you all so much! I'll try both methods and see what works best with Max. I'm glad to hear that it usually goes well for most dogs!

You're welcome, DogLover78! If you notice any side effects like vomiting or diarrhea, contact your vet right away. Otherwise, stick with the regimen and Max should be feeling much better soon.

And remember to finish the entire course of antibiotics even if you notice improvement early on. It's important for preventing any lingering infection or potential resistance issues down the line!
