Forum Topic: Doxycycline 50mg for My Pup - Advice Needed

Posted by: PawPatrol911Date: Mar 24, 2023 12:47 PM

Hi everyone,

I've been told that my dog needs to take doxycycline 50mg. He's a 6-year-old lab with some skin issues and the vet suggested this as an antibiotic treatment. I'm a bit nervous about giving him medication, especially since he’s not used to taking pills. Any tips or advice on how to administer it would be great!

Hi PawPatrol911,

First off, doxycycline is commonly used for skin infections in dogs and can help with the issues you mentioned. It's important to ensure your dog takes the full course as prescribed by your vet to avoid any resistance or incomplete treatment.

To make it easier to give him his medication:

  1. Pill Pockets: You could use pill pockets, which are soft treats that you can hide the pill inside.
  2. Caplets vs Tablets: Make sure it's in a form he can easily swallow (caplet or chewable tablet might be easier than a regular tablet).
  3. Medication Syrup: If he really struggles with pills, your vet may prescribe doxycycline as an oral syrup which is often more palatable.
  4. Masking Flavor: You could also try masking the flavor by mixing it in a small amount of wet food or peanut butter.

Always follow up with your veterinarian for any concerns about dosage and frequency to make sure you’re following their instructions properly.

Thanks so much, VetGuru101! I think pill pockets might be the way to go. My dog loves treats, and that seems like it could make this process a lot smoother.

Hi PawPatrol911,

I agree with VetGuru101. Pill pockets are a great idea! Another tip would be to start giving the treat without the pill first so he gets used to it. Once you introduce the medication into his diet, keep offering treats afterward as positive reinforcement.

Also, make sure to give doxycycline on an empty stomach—about one hour before or two hours after feeding him. This will enhance its absorption and effectiveness.

Thanks for the tips, PetPals123! I'll make sure to time it right with his meals.

You're welcome, PawPatrol911. Also, remember that consistency is key. Make a schedule and stick to it so you don't miss any doses. If there are any changes or if your dog starts acting differently (like vomiting or losing appetite), contact the vet immediately.

Good luck with the treatment! Don’t forget to keep an eye on how much water he drinks. Doxycycline can be tough on kidneys, so ensuring your dog stays hydrated is essential.

Thanks for the reminder, HappyPaw! I’ll make sure to keep his water bowl full and encourage him to drink more. Appreciate all your help!
