Forum Title: Prednisone 5mg for My Dog - Advice Needed

DoctorDogsFirst

Hey everyone,

I'm a bit worried about the dosage of Prednisone my dog is on. The vet prescribed 5mg every other day for her chronic skin condition, but I've read that some dogs can have side effects at even low doses. Has anyone here given this to their pet and noticed any issues? My dog seems fine so far, but I want to be cautious.

DoctorDogsFirst,

I’ve been there! My dog, a Cocker Spaniel named Charlie, has had chronic skin allergies too. We started him on 5mg of Prednisone every other day and saw great improvement in his skin within the first couple of weeks. However, after about two months, we noticed he was drinking more water than usual and peeing everywhere! Our vet adjusted the dosage to just once a week and it helped quite a bit.

DoctorDogsFirst,

Hi there! Prednisone is indeed commonly used for managing canine allergies and inflammation. It can be very effective but does come with potential side effects, especially if used long-term. Common ones include increased thirst and urination (polydipsia/polyuria), lethargy, increased appetite, and gastrointestinal upset.

It's great to hear that your dog seems fine so far! However, it's essential to monitor her for any changes in behavior or health. Regular follow-ups with the vet are recommended to assess how she’s doing on this medication. If you notice anything concerning, like those signs mentioned above, reach out to your vet right away.

DoctorDogsFirst,

I can relate! My dog Max was prescribed Prednisone for his itchy skin condition and we started noticing the same side effects as BarkNWhine’s Charlie. Increased water consumption is a big one – I couldn’t leave the house without him peeing everywhere!

The vet recommended gradually tapering off the dose rather than stopping abruptly, which seemed to help manage those side effects better. We also switched to giving it on an every third day basis instead of every other day once he was stabilized.

Thanks for all your feedback! It's reassuring to know I'm not alone in this and that there are ways to manage these potential issues. DrVetOnline, thanks for the medical insight; I'll definitely keep a closer eye on her and schedule another follow-up with our vet soon. PawsomePal, tapering off sounds like a good idea if we need to make changes.

You're welcome, DoctorDogsFirst! It's always better to be proactive about monitoring your pet’s health when they’re on medication. Gradually reducing the dosage as suggested by PawsomePal is indeed a smart approach should you notice any side effects.

Remember, each dog reacts differently to medications, so what works well for one might not work the same way for another. Stay in close contact with your vet and let them know if there are changes or concerns. They can help adjust dosages as needed to ensure your furry friend remains comfortable and healthy!

Absolutely, DoctorDogsFirst! Staying on top of it is key. And remember, some side effects may lessen over time once the body adjusts. But don't hesitate to reach out if you have any doubts or see changes that worry you.

Good luck with your dog’s treatment plan!
