Forum Topic: Propecia Dosage - 1mg vs. 5mg
Posted by: HairHaven789 (Patient)
Hi everyone,
I'm considering starting Propecia for my hair loss but I’m a bit confused about the dosage. Should I start with 1mg or go straight to 5mg? My doctor recommended both options, but I’m not sure which would be better for me.
Looking forward to any advice!

Hello HairHaven789,
Thanks for posting your question! Propecia is indeed an effective medication for hair loss, particularly male pattern baldness. The typical dosage prescribed is 1mg daily; however, some doctors might prescribe a higher dose of 5mg.
The 1mg dose has been extensively studied and shown to be quite effective in slowing down hair loss progression and even promoting regrowth in many cases. It's also generally better tolerated with fewer side effects.
If you start experiencing significant improvement on the 1mg dose, there might not be a need to increase it to 5mg unless specifically recommended by your doctor based on your progress or lack thereof after some time.
Side effects are typically rare but can include sexual dysfunction (e.g., erectile dysfunction), reduced libido, and occasionally depression. These side effects can occur with either dosage, though they tend to be less common at the lower dose.
I recommend starting with the 1mg dose and monitoring your progress over a few months. If you do not see significant improvement or if you experience any concerning symptoms, discuss these concerns with your healthcare provider to determine whether an adjustment in dosage might be necessary.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions.

Thanks so much for the detailed response, DrBeard!
I think I'll start with 1mg and monitor my progress. It sounds like that's the safer route to take initially. If there’s no improvement after a few months, should I then consider upping it to 5mg?

You're welcome, HairHaven789!
Starting with 1mg is definitely a good plan. The effectiveness of Propecia can vary from person to person, and it usually takes around 3-6 months to see any noticeable results. Some men may even need up to a year before they observe significant changes.
If you don't notice substantial improvements after about six months on the 1mg dose, then discussing an increase to the 5mg dosage with your doctor would be reasonable. It's essential to have regular follow-up appointments during this period so that any side effects can be monitored and addressed promptly if necessary.
Remember, while Propecia is effective for many men, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. If you don’t see the desired results or experience any concerning side effects with either dosage, other treatment options may also be available to discuss with your doctor.
Good luck! Keep us updated on how things go!

That sounds like a solid plan. I'll start with 1mg and keep an eye on it for the next few months. And yes, I’ll definitely schedule follow-ups to monitor my progress and any potential side effects.
Thanks again for all your insights, DrBeard! It’s really helpful having this information before starting any medication.
